Retail Security: how to protect your shop or showroom from burglary.

Having a well designed security system is essential to prevent theft if you have a shop or showroom displaying your products. If yours is a retail business, you’ll likely want your best products on display in your shop or showroom to entice potential customers to buy, however, always remember this can also entice potential thieves to steal.

Showroom Security Tip 1: Use effective lighting

Thieves and burglars carry out their robberies at times when they are least likely to be seen, most often in the dark at night. By simply keeping your showroom or shop lights on all night, you will deter thieves from entering your premises. Likewise, using sensor lights which come on when triggered will also deter potential burglars.

Showroom Security Tip 2: Ensure all access doors are robust and well maintained

If there are multiple ways to access your premises, make sure all access points can be locked by doors that are both robust and well maintained. Many businesses fall victim to theft or robbery through an unused back door. Business owners put all of their efforts and finances into the door or access point that customers use, and often neglect a staff or service entrance or unused access point at the rear. Make sure the door is robust, well secured on its hinges and has a multi-lock system.

Showroom Security Tip 3: Keep valuable items under lock and key

If your showroom has easily movable, high-value items on display, make sure they are kept under lock and key at all times. Whether it is jewellery, expensive homewares or cars, the more difficult it is for a thief to lift the item and leave quickly, the less likely they are to commit the crime. Add lockable display cabinets for smaller items and store the keys securely. For larger items like cars and machinery, keep vehicle keys stored securely and make it difficult for any item to be lifted out easily.

Showroom Security Tip 4: Install CCTV and video surveillance

If a thief or group of thieves thinks they are likely to be identified during a robbery, they will be far less likely to commit the crime. Visible CCTV security and video surveillance will not just deter a thief, but a comprehensive system can give you real-time information about anything suspicious happening in your showroom and peace of mind that it will provide crucial evidence should a burglary occur.

Showroom Security Tip 5: Install perimeter security

If your showroom, shop or retail space houses a high value of products, a perimeter security system should be considered. Intruder alarms will trigger when a thief or burglar enters your premises, but by then, it’s already too late. A perimeter security system will trigger long before that. By creating an alarmed zone around your premises, when a potential intruder enters the zone, your alarm will trigger. Using a combination of sensors, thermal imaging, night vision, CCTV, video surveillance and effective lighting, thieves won’t be able to get inside your premises without triggering the alarm, and real-time reaction from gardaí and police.
